Youth review: “Sauvage” by Claude Barras, a committed ode to be seen by all ages

The critics will discuss youth around two slightly different works. They will first tackle Claude Barras’ new animated film, Savagesthen to the illustrated album My name is Cloud Billy d’Eva Ofredo.

In Borneo, on the edge of the tropical forest, Kéria takes in a baby orangutan found in the palm oil plantation where her father works. At the same time Selaï, his young cousin, comes to find refuge with them to escape the conflict between his nomadic family and the logging companies. Together, Kéria, Selaï and the baby monkey named Oshi will brave all obstacles to fight against the destruction of the ancestral forest, which is more threatened than ever.

The director of My life as a Zucchini (2016) returns to the screens with a new stop-motion animated film, presented in the Special Screening of the Official Selection of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Sauvage is a sensitive and awareness-raising ode, committed to nomadic peoples and against the dangers deforestation in South America.

“My name is Billy of the Clouds” by Eva Ofredo, the story of a child who sets out to meet the world

As a young boy, Billy was destined for a cowboy destiny. One morning, he decides to put down his colt and lasso to explore the vast world. Pampa, chaos, sinkhole, blue hole, fjord, peat bog, taiga, mangrove… The landscapes crossed follow one another. Billy is surprised, amazed and learns about himself at the same time as he discovers each of these new environments.

Eva Ofredo delivers here a work in three parts. The first is a story which details the story of Billy’s journey, the second oscillates between travel notebook, diary and survival manual, it is Billy who “notes” his observations, thoughts, memories, sketches and practical information. The last, finally, is the little boy’s treasure box, his “album of wonders”, a more documentary part which reveals itself as an ode to the living. My name is Cloud Billy is a story of adventure, but also of wonder and openness to the world
