It’s a raid on the musical Emilia Perez by Jacques Audiard, who will compete in thirteen categories during the 2025 Oscars ceremony which will take place March 2 in Los Angeles. Best film, best director, best actress and best supporting actress, are some of the categories in which the French work is in the running to win the prestigious bronze statuette coveted by all of Hollywood.
Two firsts for this already cult film: star Karla Sofía Gascón is among the contenders for the Oscar for best actress, a historic first for a transgender actress. Emilia Perez is also the first film non anglophone to be nominated in so many categories. “I am very happy about it, it’s a superb record,” reacted Jacques Audiard at the microphone of RTL, Thursday January 23, following the announcement of the nominations.
Two categories are particularly close to her heart: “It would be actresses, because I know that for Karla and Zoe, it changes their lives. Already a nomination, it will change their livesand if it goes to the Oscars, it will radically change their lives,” added the director, whose emotion was palpable.
“I will be terrified”
This feat comes in an America where President Donald Trump is multiplying statements against the transgender community. “I am proud,” said Jacques Audiard. “It seems so retrograde to me,” he said, expressing his joy that the lead actress in his film, Karla Sofía Gascón, “is establishing herself as an actress.”
As for his state of mind on the evening of the ceremony, “I will be terrified”, confided the filmmaker, admitting “that there will be more pressure because there are more nominations”. The winners will be announced at the 97th Academy Awards in Los Angeles, California, on March 2.
