1917 : an impressive war film linked to the personal history of its director
Unlike his previous feature films, 1917 is the first film on which Sam Mendes took on double duty: its writing and its direction. With the help of screenwriter Kristy Wilson-Cairns, also known for her work on Last Night in Sohothe British filmmaker was inspired by the stories told to him by his grandfather, Alfred H. Mendes, a veteran of the Great War, to write his film. “The film does not tell the story of my grandfather, but rather seeks to evoke his spirit, what these men suffered, their sacrifices, and their faith in something greater than themselves”he explained during the release of 1917 in 2020.
