Published in 2022, the novel The Housekeeper by Freida McFadden enjoyed resounding success in France at the end of 2024, mainly thanks to the social network TikTok. While it is still a hit at the start of 2025, the book should soon be adapted for cinemas.
A true bestseller in the four corners of the world, The Housekeeper – The Housemaid in its original title – has largely exceeded one million copies sold since its publication in 2022. In France as in many other countries, Freida McFadden’s psychological thriller has been a real success, notably thanks to strong enthusiasm on social networks for several months. Logical consequence of this success: the incredible story of Millie, a young housekeeper in a bourgeois family hiding many secrets, will be adapted for the first time for the cinema.
The Maid: a captivating psychological thriller
Without making any spoilers, The Housekeeper follows Millie, a young woman determined to rebuild her life after serving a prison sentence. Anguished at the idea of returning to detention if she does not respect her reintegration obligations, the young woman lives in her car and tries at all costs to get a job. After a long period of fruitless searches, particularly because of her criminal record, Millie landed a job as a governess with the Winchesters, a wealthy New York family. Even if this new job is an unexpected opportunity – Millie is housed in a small room in the attic and therefore leaves her precarious car – the young woman will quickly realize that the family secret hides many secrets…
A film adaptation with a 5-star cast
As Freida McFadden announced in person last October, her best-seller will be entitled to an adaptation screened in theaters. If for the moment, it is unfortunately impossible to know its arrival date in cinemas in France, we already know that the film will be screened across the Atlantic from December 25, 2025.
Directed by Paul Feig, the film, which will be simply called The Housemaidat least in its English version, will count on Sydney Sweeney (Everything but you, Euphoria) to play the role of Millie. Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia!, Lolita in spite of myself) will play the role of the intriguing Nina Winchester, as well as Brandon Sklena (1923, Never Again) will play her husband Andrew. Italian actor, model and singer Michele Morrone (365 Days) will play the role of Enzo, the Winchesters’ mysterious Italian gardener.
Although the film officially entered production a few days ago, there is currently no release date in French cinemas. As always, you can count on SFR News to keep you informed as soon as a date is announced.
