Originally expected in theaters in July 2026, the fifth installment of the Shrek franchise will finally be released in December 2026.
Fans of Shrek will have to be patient before being able to watch the fifth part of the franchise. Originally expected in theaters on July 1, 2026, this new Shrek was pushed back to the end of December 2026.
As reported by the American media Variety, Universal Studios has revised its schedule of upcoming releases. So, besides Shrek 5another highly anticipated film, Minions 3was postponed from June 2027 to summer 2026.
A film about Donkey in preparation
According to Variety, Shrek 5 will be directed by Walt Dorhn, who had previously worked on the films Shrek 2, Shrek the Third et Shrek 4: Once Upon an End. This release will mark the 25th anniversary of the franchise launched in 2001.
For the occasion, Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz, original voices of Shrek, Donkey and Fiona, should make their return in this fifth part but for the moment, no details on the scenario and the plot of the film has not been communicated.
Questioned by the media Collider in April 2024, Eddie Murphy revealed that a Donkey film was also in the works. “The Donkey will have his own film,” he announced, specifying that, according to him, this feature film would only be produced after the release of the fifth part of Shrek.
