With an average rating of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, at the head of an impressive box office with 351 million dollars in revenue collected and already nominated for multiple awards, it’s an understatement to say thatAlien : Romulus was THE hit of the year 2024 in cinema in the world of science fiction.

A success so important that it reconciled spectators with the franchise and a sequel is already on the agenda. However, if Fede Álvarez – the director, has something to smile about, he is not the type to be satisfied with such a situation.

Special effects reworked after the film’s release

On the contrary, as he told Empire, some of the film’s special effects did not satisfy him at the time. Also, rather than turning the page once the film was released in theaters, he continued to work on it to improve the quality of Romulus for its DVD/Blu-ray version. And for this purpose, it is in particular the sequence which pays homage to the performance of Ian Holm (Rook), the Android from Alien, which has been reworked.

We lacked time during post-production to obtain a good resulthe confessed. Et I wasn’t 100% happy with some passages, where you could clearly feel the use of digital effects“. A frustration so great that, at the time, she saw him siding with the critics: “I can’t blame people who may have reacted negatively to this.“.

Fortunately, driven by the success of the film, the director had the opportunity to improve the effects to satisfy everyone. “We fixed that. We improved the scene for the DVD/Blu-ray releasehe assured. I convinced the studio that we needed to spend money and I made sure that the company in charge of the effects [animatroniques et numériques] is given enough time to complete the effects. And it’s so much better“.

A care for detail far from being anecdotal, since it confirms Alvarez’s passion for the saga and reassures us about one thing: with the sequel already programmed, he will not be content to botch it just for the money. Where one could fear an “episode too many” effect, his love for Alien confirms to us that he should never betray the license.
