THE MORNING LIST
To reduce some of the time spent watching TV during the holidays – which can easily break family harmony – here are seven ideas for “platformer” films tested and approved by critics. Mondefor all audiences.
“My future self”: how to say goodbye
Under this poorly translated title – the film is called in English My Old Ass –hides one of the most beautiful independent pearls of the year. It is by Megan Park, Canadian actress in teenage comedies who has since gone behind the camera, and author of a first feature film noted in 2021, The Fallout. Adolescence also remains the subject of My Old Ass since we follow young Elliott in the summer of her 18th birthday, as she prepares to leave her family and friends for university. One night, a mushroom trip makes him meet his older double, from the future. This one has the face and the jabber of Aubrey Plaza (The White Lotus), and this 39-year-old Elliott gives her some enigmatic advice, which the young girl is quick to not follow. His summer is turned upside down, and what could have been nothing more than a Sundance-style coming-of-age story turns out, thanks to the grace of the staging and its actors, to be a deep and moving reflection on the end of childhood, on the passing of time and mourning, whatever its object. A pure marvel. Me. F.
