The survey to choose the best sequel in film history that we proposed in El Debate contained up to 40 titles corresponding to second parts (in some cases, also third or even subsequent installments of a saga) that did not detract in any way from the original film. Despite this high number of options to choose from, there was one that was the great favorite to be chosen as the best sequel in the history of cinema. And that is the one that, in effect, has prevailed in the votes: The Godfather part II.
The extraordinary feature film directed by Francis Ford Coppola in 1974, two years after The Godfatherhas been the film most voted for by El Debate readers with 37.7%. It has remained far away The Empire Strikes Back – Star Wars: Episode Vsecond with 12.3%. Two titles have been involved in an intense duel for third place, which finally went to The dark knightwith 9%, to the detriment of Terminator 2fourth with 8.3%.
The fifth position has been occupied by a film from the Indiana Jones saga. Specifically, the third, Indiana Jones and the last crusadethe film starring Harrison Ford and Sean Connery that 5% of the participants in the survey opted for.
Aliens: the returnwas sixth with 3.8%, and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the Kingseventh with 3.3%. They tied for eighth place Return of the Jedi-Star Wars: Episode VI, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers y back to the future 2all of them with 1.67%.
