Netflix finally finds some breathing room with the release of its thriller Carry-On which is making a great start on the platform.
The Christmas period is always a golden breeding ground for Netflix, which has made it a preferential playground. It’s quite simple, the top 10 most viewed English-language films on the platform contain five films released in December: Bird Box in 2018, We are the heroes in 2020, Don’t Look Up in 2021, At Knives Out 2 in 2022 and The World After Us in 2023. And that’s without counting the enormous successes of Midnight in the universe (released at Christmas 2020) or 6 Underground (in 2019), undoubtedly at the gates of the top 10.
In 2024, the red N is mainly counting on season 2 of Squid Game to explode the scores (available from December 26 the day after Christmas), like You in 2018, The Witcher in 2019 and 2021, The Bridgerton Chronicles in 2020, Emily in Paris in 2021 and 2022 or Berlin in 2023. However, before knowing if the sequel to the Korean phenomenon will attract as many spectators as season 1, Netflix is already filling up with its thriller Carry-On directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and led by Taron Egerton (Kingsman).
IL CARRY NETFLIX
Indeed, the Netflix sauce fusion of Phone Game et Die Hard 2 had a great start according to the figures revealed by the platform on its database. Thus, in just three days since the film was released on December 13, Carry-On would have been viewed approximately 42 million times (in so-called full viewing). It was positioned as number 1 of the most viewed films of the moment in 77 countries and entered the top 10 in 93 countries. An impressive score which should explode a little more with its second week where it will have no competition on the platform.
For comparison, The World After Us which was released during the same period had started on similar bases with 41.7 million so-called complete views. For its second week, Sam Esmail’s film had garnered 44.9 million additional views to end its run, after its first 91 days, at a total of 143.4 million (i.e. the 5th best score of all time on the platform for an English-speaking film). Carry-On therefore knows what he must more or less aim for in the second week to hope to have a similar destiny.
If the future will quickly tell us if the Netflix thriller keeps up the pace, it is in any case a breath of fresh air for Netflix in this sad year 2024. It is indeed the best start for one of its originals in 2024 in front The Lady and the Dragon (35,3), The Union (33,1), And a square full (32,8), Rebel Ridge (31,2), Atlas (28.2) or the huge flop of Rebel Moon 2 (21.4), for films released on a Friday.
Even taking into account Le Flic de Beverly Hills 4 (released on a Wednesday), Carry-On did better since the return of Axel Foley had accumulated 41 million so-called complete views for its debut. With the rather positive critical feedback and effective word of mouth during the holidays, Collet-Serra’s film could therefore become one of the platform’s big hits. Enough to possibly push the red N to order a possible sequel to Carry-On ?
The film is still available on the platform since December 13. For the rest, we will now closely monitor its evolution, the scores of Squid Game as well as the start of the other cinema event on which Netflix seems to be banking at the end of the year: Messengers of ware, available from December 20, 2024.
