Among the crowd of theories swirling around regarding the return of Chris Evans in Avengers 5 : Doomsdayone of them seems credible, and would bring back Captain America as a hero.
The announcement of the return of the brothers Anthony and Joe Russo to the direction of the next films Avengers : Doomsday et Avengers : Secret Wars has already set the Marvel community in turmoil. And the temperature has risen even further with the revelation of the return of Robert Downey Jr. in the role of the evil Doctor Doom.
After the confirmation that this actress was going to return in Avengers 5and the fact that Chris Evans, the historic Captain America of the MCU, was also going to be part of this little superheroic romp, speculation regarding how Captain America could be reborn in Avengers : Doomsday are going well. It was speculated that Captain America might return as a villain, but a widely circulating theory suggests that he could return in a new form, indeed as a superhero.
Avengers 5 en mode Nomad
Chris Evans' potential return to the MCU, after his poignant farewell in Avengers : Endgameis a prospect more distressing than reassuring. As Steve Rogers, his story arc seemed complete, with an epilogue showing him aged and having chosen a peaceful life with Peggy Carter in an alternate timeline.
However, phases 3 and 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe worked hard to make us understand that the multiverse is cool, that it opens the way to infinite possibilities, and above all that it swept away with the back of the hand any intention of immutability of a story (and it's sad).
Among all these endless possibilities regarding the return of Captain America, it is possible to see him return as an aging hero, as a big villain associated with Doctor Doom, or, as Nomad, an identity Steve Rogers adopted in the comics during the 1970s.
This theory was confirmed by Jeff Sneider, a well-informed insider of what's going on in Hollywood, in an interview he gave to the podcast The Hot Mic (information that we will not take at face value, of course).
“I heard what his character would be. I had this conversation today, and someone mentioned it: Nomad! »
Under the name Nomad, Steve Rogers evolved as a hero without a flag or direct allegiance, acting independently. It was an identity he took on after he discovered that very high-ranking figures in the American administration were deeply corrupt.
Captain America then became Nomad, a stateless hero symbolizing the fact that the American dream was at half mast. Given that Nomad first appeared in 1974, the year of the Watergate scandal, it can be seen as an echo of how the American people felt about the betrayal of their own president.
This change of superheroic identity would make it possible to resurrect the character of Chris Evans, by adding a new layer to his psychology and substantially modifying his personality. In other words, it would avoid a copy-pasted repetition of the Captain America already well known to the public, in favor of a hero in full rebellion against the established order, and with methods sometimes more radical than those of the Sentinel of Liberty.
It remains to be seen whether Marvel's costume designers will have the courage to create the famous black and yellow Nomad costume for Chris Evans (we don't believe it for a single second). To be sure, you will have to wait for the release ofAvengers : Doomsday on April 29, 2026 in French cinemas. As for Avengers : Secret Warsit is still scheduled for May 5, 2027.
