Netflix releases a number of films and series into its catalog every week, without anyone noticing them or the platform officially announcing it. Écran Large looks back at the new features added by Netflix from December 13 to 19, 2024, films and series combined in a non-exhaustive list.
What are the films and series not to be missed this week on the streaming platform ?
CARRY ON
- Already available
- Duration: 1h59
What is it about? On Christmas Eve, in a crowded airport, a security guard is given a terrifying ultimatum: let a suspicious object slip through or let the woman he loves die.
Why should you watch it? Did you like Liam Neeson in Non-Stopyou loved the closed session Phone Game where Colin Farrell was mistreated by a mysterious interlocutor and you swear by the saga Die Hard ? Never mind, Carry-On is therefore an essential for you since it mixes almost all these references thanks to the audacity (sorry we’re getting carried away) of director Jaume Collet-Serra. Even if he is guilty of Black Adam (yes yes), the gentleman is a regular in B series between Non-Stop SO, The Commuter or even Night Run.
Led by Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman, Carry-On allows him to deliver what he does best: a little thriller full of tension with some good action scenes, amusing twists (or not) and sometimes inspired staging.
TERMINATOR : DARK FATE
- Available December 15
- Duration: 2h09
What is it about? Of a franchise that is going so badly that everyone wants us to forget Terminator : Renaissance (which was a minor failure, so the sequels were canceled) and Terminator : Genisys (idem) with a direct sequel to Terminator et Terminator 2 which erases all other films. And we bring back Schwarzy and Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor to pass the pill, this time with a feminine John Connor to save from yet another Terminator villain.
Why should you watch it? Because it is less bad than Terminator : Genisysbut that doesn’t mean much. Less exotic than Renaissance but less bland than The Rising of the Machines, Terminator : Dark Fate directed by Tim Miller (Deadpool) is mainly content with reproduce an ultra-worn formula.
The new Terminator Rev-9 is a pale copy of the others, history repeats the same steps (face the enemy, slow him down, flee, be caught, and start again), and actresses Mackenzie Davis and Natalia Reyes have too little to make their characters exist. Schwarzy reached the end of the road with this role, and the best ideas around Sarah Connor ultimately don’t have room to exist. The famous intro scene made a lot of fans scream, but the real problem lies elsewhere: Dark Fate has nothing to say, and proves that the saga Terminator should be left alone.
SPIDER-MAN : NO WAY HOME
- Available December 15
- Duration: 2h28 in cinema version, 2h37 in long version
What is it about? From Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire who tried for MONTHS to make people believe that they would not reprise their roles as Spider-Man in a gigantic crossover where Tom Holland’s Spider-Man asks Doctor Strange for help , following the events of Spider-Man : Far From Home. But the spell will go wrong, and open wide the doors of fan service multiverse…
Why should you watch it? Because this film, whether we like it or not, was a real phenomenon. With more than 1.9 billion at the box office for an official budget of 200 million, Spider-Man : No Way Home became the third biggest hit in the MCUbehind Avengers : Endgame (2.7 billion), Avengers : Infinity War (2 billion). Quite a success for Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, who found common ground to collaborate around Spider-Man in 2015.
Beyond the commercial aspect, the film directed by Jon Watts is far from being one of the most memorable Marvel. Steeped in fan service, juggling too many characters to do anything really interesting (thought of Andrew Garfield, Tobey Maguire, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina and Jamie Foxx), the blockbuster seems above all designed to offer a shot of nostalgia. This is very little, especially with action scenes so mundane and forgettable.
And it’s not the long version, with its ten additional minutes (notably another scene with Matt Murdock, and a tad more time with the three Spider-Mans at the end) which will change a lot.
COME BACK TO ME
- Available December 15
- Duration: 2h03
What is it about? In the 1930s, a little girl from a good English family accuses her older sister’s lover of a crime he did not commit, plunging the destiny of both into tragedy.
Why should you watch it? A redemption story par excellence (its original title is “Atonement”, which precisely means “atonement” or “reparation”), Come back to me East the height of the Joe Wright-Keira Knightley collaborationwhich had started two years previously with Pride and Prejudice and continued in 2012 with Anna Karenine. This fresco, as romantic as it is tragic, against the backdrop of the Second World War, can boast ofhaving revealed James McAvoyamid a phenomenal cast that includes very young Saoirse Ronan and Juno Temple, Benedict Cumberbatch, Romola Garai and Vanessa Redgrave. Just that.
The film is based on the novel Expiation by Ian McEwan, released in 2001, and plays on the subtlety between reality and fiction in a story that talks about things as harsh as war and all forms of violence. A true journey through time that depicts a guilt that does not fade, as much as a love that also endures, Come back to me offers as many moving scenes as particularly hard moments. To see if we like dramas that hurt, but with a good dose of rose water to get it all across.
BUT ALSO…
Four Good Days, Parenthood, Iron Family, The Prince of Dragons: In the Footsteps of Aaravos…
