Disney+ seeks to release its films six months after their theatrical release

With Disney’s withdrawal from Canal offers, the media chronology could be disrupted, particularly as Disney+ seeks to optimize its place in cinema financing.

Canal+ and Disney have announced the end of their partnership and, if the subscribers of the Vivendi subsidiary will be impacted, it is also the media timeline that could be turned upside down. According to information from EchoesDisney would seek to reduce the window for broadcasting films on its SVOD platform to nine, or even six months.

For the moment, it is Canal+, as the leading broadcaster of French cinema, which is authorized to broadcast feature films six months after their theatrical release. A privilege acquired thanks to financing of 210 million euros per year, while Disney+, by investing only 13 million, must wait 17 months. However, the current timeline expires in February and Disney is reportedly willing to shell out €55 million per year for a shorter window.

However, to be at Canal’s level with six months of waiting, Disney will have to guarantee a minimum amount of financing and Canal, for its part, could lower its contribution if Disney obtains a window too close to its own. Some whisper that the Vivendi subsidiary could lower its contribution by up to 120 million euros.
