Over the last decade, this immense science fiction saga has lost its splendor, even its original director has not managed to revive it. Author of a much-maligned duology, he could return to the helm, after more than ten years wearing the hat of producer rather than director, and the new breath that Fede Alvarez offered to the franchise would have convinced the filmmaker to put at the point of a trilogy.
Ridley Scott can't even count on his former glories anymore
At eighty-seven years old, director Ridley Scott doesn't want to put an end to his already damn long filmography. Author of feature films that have marked cinema, the director has nevertheless disappointed in recent years. If there are sometimes ideas that do not find their audience (The Last Duel / The Last Duel), other highly anticipated films disappoint, like House of Gucci or Napoléon. In recent weeks, Ridley Scott has slightly cleared his reputation – at least, in terms of critical reception – with the release of Gladiator IIa sequel which arrives twenty-four years after the original opus carried by Russell Crowe.
On the other hand, in terms of box office, Ridley Scott imposed a very big challenge on himself by exploding the envelope allocated to the film, reaching a budget of 310 million dollars. For now, Gladiator II has only raised $325 million worldwide, almost a month after its official release. Clearly, Ridley Scott has difficulty finding the perfect recipe to attract the favor of the public and the box office. However, if the formula does not work with GladiatorRidley Scott could return with a franchise that is on the rise, and it is none other than Alien !
Ridley Scott could return to the helm of the Alien saga and conclude his trilogy
After giving a second chance to one of the greatest classics of his filmography, Ridley Scott could reconnect with his famous xenomorph, who enjoyed worldwide success in 1979 with the soberly titled Alien. Regarding Prometheus et Alien : CovenantRidley Scott would have liked to reproduce the same pattern. In vain. Today, other filmmakers are bringing the franchise back to the forefront, notably Fede Alvarez and his Alien : Romulus. For his part, Ridley Scott does not hide his frustration, resulting from his loss of control over the saga, even though he retains his status as producer.
It is partly for this reason that the director would see himself taking back the helm to continue the mythology that he himself established by directing Prometheus et Alien : Covenant. According to The Hollywood ReporterRidley Scott would have confided “ developing a new Alien film for 20th Century Studios in the wake of the success of Romulus ». It is also interesting to recall that Alien : Covenant ended on a cliffhanger on the spread of “facehuggers” in the universe, which could actually give Ridley Scott the opportunity to conclude the trilogy around the character of David. It remains to be seen whether or not the director will seize this opportunity!
