Although this form of spectacle only returned to the forefront in the 2000s, the concert film has existed since the beginning of the 20th century. In the era of silent cinema, screenings were often accompanied by musicians. But with the appearance of sound cinema, the concert film gradually faded away. Over the past twenty years, it has become fashionable again by offering the screening of great classic films with their original soundtracks played live.

This 1993 masterpiece, directed by Henry Selick from a screenplay by Tim Burton, recounts the adventures of Jack Skellington. This Pumpkin King, tired of Halloween pranks, decides to breathe the Christmas spirit into Halloweenville. This delicious blend of wonder and horror is enhanced by the unforgettable soundtrack, all of which were written and composed by Danny Elfman.

The film and its have become essential with each other, but also without each other. “The Nightmare Before Christmas” won the Saturn Award for best fantasy film and best music in 1994 and the film's album remained ranked 98th. top album sales position on the Billboard 200 for nine weeks !

Under the direction of Benjamin Levy, conductor and musical director of the Orchester national de Cannes, Danny Elfman's famous score will be performed live, accompanying the screening of the film in French. From the reassuring chimes of Christmas town to the disturbing accents of Halloween, the music brilliantly juggles between medieval influences, jazz, blues and classic film music in the style of Bernard Herrmann or Max Steiner.

“The Nightmare Before Christmas” has become over the years a cult work, adored by generations of spectators for its gothic universe and its message imbued with magic and fantasy. This film concert is a rare opportunity to rediscover this classic for older children or to introduce younger children to the very special world of Tim Burton. Recommended for children aged eight and over, this event is an opportunity to spend an original family moment in an enchanting setting, with the power of a live orchestra to amplify every emotion.

This classic film celebrates its 30th anniversary in the year 2024.

In line with its theme “Music and images” created in 2021, the Cannes National Orchestra continues its ambition to combine cinema and music. After this event, four film concerts will be offered to children (but not only that…).

See you on February 8 and 9 for the animated film “Azur et Asmar” and March 15 and 16 for “Cartoon Orchestra”, which will offer a selection of cartoons accompanied by the music of the Orchestra.
