the director begs you to go see the film in the cinema

JC Chandor seems slightly taken aback and no longer knows what to do to make spectators want to go see his Kraven the Hunter.

After a two-year break following the Morbius catastrophe, the Sony Spider-Man Universe returned in force to the cinema in 2024. The saga offered us the ignoble Madame WebTom Hardy’s terminal return as an alien creature with the awful Venom : The Last Dance and of course, to end the year well and celebrate Christmas as it should be: Kraven the Hunter with Aaron Taylor-Johnson. This third film (the sixth in the universe) has not yet been released and is already frightening since its release has been postponed three times (between strikes, complicated filming and fear of competition).

However, there are some reasons to believe it with the presence, behind the camera, of JC Chandor, director of the very successful Triple Frontier, A Most Violent Year or Margin Call. Why would such an author (he scripted these four previous films) embark on a superheroic adventure that he cannot control? Mystery. On the other hand, one thing is certain, it represents a form of hope for movie fans. And in this little game, he begs us to trust him despite the hellish history of the Sony Spiderverse.

Hunt for spectators

Indeed, with a note interval ranging from 1/5 (Venom) at 0.5/5 (all the rest) on Large Screen, Sony’s superheroic universe has never raised the bar in our opinion (or even lowered it over time). It is therefore difficult to imagine JC Chandor working miracles but in an interview with ComicBook, he tried to send a message to convince us:

“We need people to give us a chance and come out and support this movie, and literally try to forget some of the things that happened. Give our film a chance. »

Basically, I promise it won’t be as bad as the films before so go see the film. Even if the trailer for Kraven the Hunter seems to promise more brutal and assertive action, not sure that this supplication is really enough to attract spectators. Perhaps it should have threatened spectators refusing to go to theaters that they will be mercilessly chased away by Kraven? The success of the film will in any case be quite essential for Sony.

Who goes hunting and loses their movie ticket?

And Venom 3 has rather succeeded by already raking in more than 456 million dollars worldwide (for a budget of 120), Morbius et Madame Web had been huge commercial flops (especially the second with only 100 million cumulative worldwide for a budget of 80 million excluding marketing). Suffice it to say that Kraven the Hunter which cost more than all the other films in the Sony Spiderverse with its 130 million dollars will not really have any room for error.

Luckily, the superheroic universe will have no competition on its own ground when it is released (no Marvel or DC), but it is therefore a hell of a challenge that awaits it. Especially since in the middle of Christmas holidays, families and spectators could well turn their attention to other more mainstream films (Mufasa : Le Roi Lion, Wicked, Sonic 3) or another form of brutality (Gladiator 2, The Lord of the Rings: War for Rohirrim).
