“The Infinity Saga”, consisting of phases 1 to 3 of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), consists of 23 films released between 2008 (the first being Iron Man) and 2019 (the last being Spider-Man: Far From Home). With a multitude of characters from different worlds, but also from different eras, it is a difficult exercise to maintain temporal coherence throughout the plots. Spoiler, Marvel didn't entirely succeed.
2016 marked the start of the third phase of the MCUwith the arrival on the big screen of Captain America : Civil War. What a movie gives birth to the MCU version of Peter Parker, aka Spider-Manwho had the right to his own film a year later.

A temporal inconsistency
In Spider-Man : Homecoming (2017), the first film dedicated to Peter Parker (played by Tom Holland) in the MCU, fans noted a big inconsistency. At the very beginning of the film, a scene shows us the damage from the Battle of New York, which takes place in Avengers (2012), whose story takes place in 2012. Adrian Toomes, played by Michael Keatonis then put in charge of the construction site and steals alien equipment. Following this, an eight-year ellipse occursindicated by a banner displaying “8 years later”, therefore placing the plot in 2020. This is confirmed during the film thanks to a line from Adrian Toomes, nicknamed “The Vulture”, who speaks of “eight years” without having had any problems with the police.
Seoul here: the year 2020 in the universe corresponds to a period lying two years after Avengers : Infinity War (2018), which means that Peter Parker shouldn't even be alive. In reality, the story is supposed to take place two months later Captain America : Civil War, i.e. the year 2016 of the MCU.
Marvel assume
There had been a few theories from fans, who speculated that perhaps Avengers was set in 2008, but the most likely theory was that Marvel had simply made a mistake. The American studio confirmed itin a book published on October 24, 2023, entitled The Marvel Cinematic Universe – An Official Timelinewhich retraces the timeline of phases 1 to 4. Indeed, page 173, the character Miss Minutes appearsand explains:
Red Line Alert! Hello again! Adrian Toomes says the Battle of New York took place eight years ago, but this event only took place four years before. It's a real headache for us, I think an analyst misplaced the file.
This isn't Marvel's only consistency errorwhich had already made the Infinity Gauntlet appear simultaneously in Thanos' hands, and in the vault of Asgard. The error could have been rectified thanks to the film Thor : Ragnarok (2017), in which Hela claimed that the Asgard Gauntlet was a fake. This time, however, Marvel will do nothing to correct it.
