The future of Star Wars in cinema remains thwarted. Five years after the last trilogy, no new films have been released. If The Mandalorian & Grogu is still on track, another feature film, scheduled to be released a few months later, has been postponed.
Five years after the release of the third trilogy, the return of Star Wars in cinema remains very fragile. Variety magazine learned in its November 15, 2024 edition that a feature film project which was to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026 was finally postponed to a later date, without particular explanations.
The film with Rey, victim of the postponement?
Unnamed, this mysterious film would likely be the one featuring Rey Skywalker years after the events of Episode IX. This sequence of L’Ascension de Skywalker was made official in April 2023 in the presence of part of the film team, including actress Daisy Ridley (Rey) and director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
Instead, Disney has positioned another film for December 18, 2026: Ice Age 6a saga which celebrated its twenty years of existence two years ago.
The feature film centered on Rey would encounter production problems, according to the specialist press. There have been reports of the departure of several screenwriters: Justin Britt-Gibson, Damon Lindelof and, most recently, Steven Knight. Broadly speaking, this film is supposed to show Rey’s efforts to rebuild a new Jedi order.
The Mandalorian & Grogu will relaunch Star Wars in cinemas
This turbulence partly reflects Lucasfilm’s difficulties in relaunching its cinema license. The final trilogy received mixed reception from audiences and critics. The lack of originality of the story is a recurring criticism, due to a plot that is too similar to the original trilogy and the poorly justified (or poorly used) presence of certain characters.
For the moment, the only project that is still on track is The Mandalorian & Groguannounced in early 2024 and expected in cinemas on May 22, 2026. This will be the first film Star Wars extending a series (The Mandalorian). This will be included in the mandoversethe universe shared between the series around the Mandalorian. Another film will conclude this arc.
Other films Star Wars are planned for the future, but the information is still patchy. There is talk of a new trilogy, which would follow the Skywalker saga, a film on the dawn of the Jedi and another on the youth of Lando Calrissian. Directors like Rian Johnson, Shawn Levy and Taika Waititi also have to shoot their own productions.
