There is very little chance that a film or series will be unanimously approved by critics and the public. Except that Kiyotaka Oshiyama's film, initially written by Tatsuki Fujimoto, Look Back, achieves this feat and manages to conquer the hearts of all its spectators. It then becomes the fall 2024 film not to be missed!
Why such a standing ovation for Look Back?
Look Back is a manga that already benefits from excellent reviews. Tatsuki Fujimoto, the mangaka, has been applauded for his very powerful visual story. He managed to transport many readers into the story, as intimate as it is touching, of Fujino and Kyomoto, two young girls passionate about art.
Through the different chapters of this one-shot manga, we can decipher many aspects of friendship, namely passion, jealousy, joy and dreams. It's a manga, or shall we say a little candy, which keeps you entertained by its reflection on art and the creative process, but above all by the evolution of the relationship between the two teenagers.
One volume was enough for Tatsuki Fujimoto to describe a lot of emotions, and thus, obtain so many rave reviews. Well done artist!
After a success on paper, it's now the turn of the feature film!
With a desire to “go beyond the standard language of Japanese commercial animated films”, Kiyotaka Oshiyama worked with a team of 10 animators to give a unique touch to the feature film. The director wanted to pay homage to the paper format by reproducing the drawings as they were. So, he affirms that the result is much cleaner on the other films, but that this sacrifice is in reality a choicethat of “seeing the drawing with its life and its emotion”. Putting Tatsuki Fujimoto's drawing into motion was a great challenge for Kiyotaka Oshiyama and his team, but the hard work was well worth it, making this film so unique.
The adaptation posed a challenge in terms of the dynamism of the image. Color allowed us to find visual efficiency. The film is only 60 minutes long. So that spectators can follow to the end and not get lost along the way, we had to find ways to capture their attention.
Thus, by its accuracy of animation and the precision provided in the way of adapting the manga, the feature film is widely applauded by spectators : “This beautiful tragedy is a love letter to anime lovers and creatives”, “The brevity of this fast-paced story, which will have you losing your mind in the blink of an eye, proves inseparable from the lasting power of its impactful impact”, “Made through a simple, but effective, hand-drawn aesthetic, Oshiyama's film disarms its viewers with its measured pace and apparent simplicity.”.
To put it simply, Look Back is a real event not to be missed. You can find it on Amazon Prime, so if you have a subscription, cancel your evening and sit comfortably on your sofa to devour this little gem of Japanese animation.
