Impossible 8 gets a trailer… It’s really the end

It’s almost the end for Ethan Hunt and his team. Twenty-eight years after his first adventures in front of Brian de Palma’s camera, Tom Cruise is preparing to say goodbye to the universe adapted from the eponymous series. Mission : Impossible 8 promises to be the conclusion of several decades of adventures across the globe and its title leaves little room for doubt. Thought to be the second part of Dead Reckoning, The Final Reckoning will see him once again confront an artificial intelligence that could put world peace at risk.

The first trailer comes with a cryptic quote, “our lives are the sum of our choices”. It’s a safe bet that Ethan Hunt will find himself facing difficult dilemmas. To emphasize the solemnity of the moment – we rarely say goodbye several times – Paramount has compiled some emblematic scenes from previous films. Then, we discover that almost the entire team will be back. Simon Pegg et Ving Rhames are returning to service. If Pegg only appears from the third opus of the saga, Ving Rhames has accompanied Tom Cruise on these high-flying missions since the very first film in 1996. Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter) is also on the trip, his character is among the new recruits. Moreover, it will be necessary to count on Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff et Henry Czerny. Rebecca Ferguson is the only one not on the list returning actors for this sequel.

New feat for Tom Cruise?

At 62, the American actor is not the type to rely on stuntmen to achieve technical feats. In 2023, Paramount Pictures had largely evolved the promotional campaign around one of his exploits. For the purposes of a scene, Tom Cruise threw himself into the void aboard a motorcycle. From a huge launching pad located on a mountain, the actor dived without a net before deploying a parachute. The exercise required hours of training, and gave the producers and insurance companies on set some cold sweats. New action scenes will be on the program for this eighth part, Paramount is nevertheless careful not to say too much on the subject. We can expect that a new aerobatics performance will be on the program.

Hit au box-office ?

It remains to be seen whether the public will be there. In 2023, Mission : Impossible – Dead Reckoning hadn’t really had a huge success in the cinema. Delays linked to the pandemic and health measures increased the bill, the budget was $290 million according to sources close to the matter. It was a record for the saga, which could nevertheless count on increasing revenues to amortize this investment.

Mission : Impossible became a license that counts for the industry, failure was not really on the cards. Mission : Impossible 6 had exceeded $790 million in revenueor 100 million more than the previous opus. We could expect that the seventh part would approach the billion mark. Top Gun : Maverick had done it a year earlier and all the lights seemed to be green. Eventually, Mission : Impossible — Dead Reckoning will not harvest that 570 million dollars throughout its first operation. This was not enough to amortize the substantial budgetwhich obviously does not include marketing costs. Let us also remember that a majority of the sums collected in cinemas around the world are allocated to cinema operators. Paramount Pictures undoubtedly left a few marbles there. The bill should be lower for this eighth opus, enough to give the studio a nice success.
