Feline fans are coming to French cinemas this month! Barely a week after its theatrical release, this animated film has already broken an impressive record. A first for its distributor, and a good sign for the future of this lovely story.

Everyone wants to see this little cat in the cinema

Animated cinema is doing quite well at the end of the year! After the dazzling success of Vice-Versa 2 this summer, the warm welcome of Robot Sauvage (The Wild Robot in English) and Transformers: The Beginning in October, it's the turn of a superb animated feature film to find its audience. Flowalso called Flow, the cat who was no longer afraid of water is a Latvian-French-Belgian production produced by Gints Zilbalodisthe Latvian director who had already impressed the crowds at International Animated Film Festival in 2019 with Elsewhere (Away in English), a film that he created entirely alone.

According to boxofficefr on Twitter (or X), Flowwhich was released in French cinemas last October 30has already broken a record in its first week of operation. Barely seven days after its launch, the film has already accumulated more than 150,000 entriesa first for its distributor. The latter is none other than UFO Distributiona company that recently took on the distribution of The Outrun with Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird), but also, in a completely different register, the cult Rubber (this incredible film with a tire with murderous tendencies) in 2010.

Flow's touching story

Presented at Annecy International Animated Film Festival last June, Flow won no less than 4 prizes: those of the jury, the public, the Gan Foundation for Diffusion, and best original music. The film was also chosen to represent Latvia at the Oscars 2025 in the category of best international film. In other words, this animated feature film is highly appreciated by critics, with a score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes which many critics justify by evoking the quality of its animation (an argument supported by Guillermo del Toro on Twitter), but also its innovative structure.

Flow tells the epic tale of a little black cat who is afraid of water, in a world where humanity seems to have disappeared and where violent floods shake otherwise green landscapes. During his journey, the feline hero will meet different animals, such as a playful labrador, a lazy capybara, a lemur with a penchant for kleptomania, a helpful whale, and a secretary with an injured wing. Together, they will have to face the changing weather aboard a sailing boat, and learn to overcome their differences to face the trials that await them – all without uttering a single word, the characters being entirely silent.
