On October 30, Venom’s third and final adventure is released in French theaters. But then, what will be next for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) and more particularly for Venom? Well, obviously things aren’t going to stop with The Last Dance.
Venom 3 : the exit is getting closer
In 2018, Venom explodes the box office. With more than $856 million recipe, this first Venom is a success for Sony. The film directed by Ruben Fleischer also has another purpose: launch the SSU at the cinema. Produced by Sony, this connected universe aims to develop the Spider-Man universe but… without Spider-Man. The firm thus capitalizes on the world of the weaver and its worst enemieswithout developing Peter Parker. Besides Venom, three other films have been released: Venom – Let There Be Carnage, Morbius et Madame Web. And other projects are expected like Kraven the Hunter et Venom : The Last Dance.
Planned for October 30 next in French cinemas, Venom : The Last Dance concludes the trilogy led by Tom Hardy. Directed by Kelly Marcelthe feature film has the heavy task of making people forget the critical and popular failure of Venom : Let There Be Carnage. As a reminder, this second Venom had met some particularly bad reviews and had reported “only” $506 million of box office revenue.
What’s next?
But a question remains. What will happen next Venom 3 ? At present we do not really know if Tom Hardy has finished his contract with Sony and whether or not he intends to return to the role of Venom. Kelly Marcel, who directs the third part of the saga, is involved in the development of the franchise Venom since the first film. She is co-screenwriter from the first opus, screenwriter of the second and was catapulted to the realization of this third. During an interview with IGNKelly Marcel addressed the sequel, and suggested that after Venom could revolve around Knull:
We’re entering spoiler territory here and we hope that part of the pleasure of watching the film will be not knowing what’s going to happen. But believe me, we know very well how important Knull is to the fans, and in the same way we laid the foundation for Venom, we hope we do the same with Knull. The King in Black is far too powerful to be there just once.
Knull will be one of the antagonists of this Venom 3. In the comics, Knull is the creator of the symbiotes. Created in 2018, Knull is an ancient primordial god. It is a cosmic entity that evolves in the Realm of Darkness. In addition to Symbiotes, Knull also created the Necroswordwhich is manipulated by Gorr In Thor : Love and Thunder. There are many rumors surrounding Knull’s importance in Venom 3, and especially in the rest of the Marvel universe. It is rumored that Knull could play a central role in the SSU and could even appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), potentially in Spider-Man 4. One thing is certain, Knull should be the Thanos of the SSU, as Kelly Marcel always explains:
This film introduces Knull, but that only touches on the beginning of his story. The best Marvel villains are developed over time. Here, Knull is the threat lurking in the background who will test the absolute limits of Eddie and Venom’s relationship. But it is their relationship that remains the heart of the story.
The director also confirmed once again that Venom 3 would bring a form of conclusion to Eddie Brock’s trajectory:
From the beginning, Tom and I envisioned a story told in three parts, and that this narrative would culminate in a third film for reasons you will discover. As fans know, there are many, many more stories with the symbiotes. The universe is vast and rich, and a single film could not have done Knull justice. Beyond this trilogy, there are other stories to explore. God is coming.
There is therefore no longer any doubt: Knull is the future of SSU. In any case, all we hope is that Venom : The Last Dance will be more convincing than the two previous parts and will make us forget the nausea that the second film gave us…
