Asterix is ​​irreducible, even in Pathé. StudioCanal, a subsidiary of Canal+, will produce the next live-action film based on the adventures of the famous Gaul. “StudioCanal was able to convince us of its ambition, its international know-how, the quality of its teams and its professionalism,” welcomed Isabelle Magnac, the president of Editions Albert René, in a joint press release with the studio.

In 2023, Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdomthe fifth live-action film based on the adventures of the diehard Gauls, co-produced by Pathé and directed by Guillaume Canet, attracted 4.6 million spectators in French cinemas, the biggest success in French cinema that year.

Hachette and the magic potion Asterix

This Asterix film will be the first produced by the new Canal+ production structure. StudioCanal Stories is a new label dedicated to adaptations of literary works. “In 2023, almost half of the biggest hits at the American and French cinema box offices were literary adaptations,” explained Maxime Saada to the shareholders of Vivendi (parent company of Canal+), gathered on Monday April 29 at a general meeting.

“This is why, inspired by the merger of Vivendi and the Lagardère group (which includes Hachette Livre, editor’s note), we decided to create a new label at StudioCanal, StudioCanal Stories. Our first project, to inaugurate this new label in style, will be the next adaptation of Hachette’s most powerful franchise, in comics and cinema (…), Asterix. »

Shabbat in 2025

No date, nor any other details on the storyline or casting have been announced regarding this sixth film in live-action of Asterix.

At the same time, Canal+ is developing an animated series adapted from the album The Battle of the Leadersdirected by Alain Chabat, which will be available on Netflix in 2025.
