After “Back To Black” about Amy Winehouse, what are the next expected musical biopics?

CULTURE – After the musical films dedicated to Bob Marley, released in February and to Amy Winehouse, in theaters from this Wednesday, April 24, pop stars continue to invade the big screen. And this trend is not about to run out of steam. Between the one planned on Bob Dylan or the one on Michael Jackson, HuffPost takes stock of the musical biopics expected for the end of the year and the beginning of 2025.

Mr Aznavour, by Grand Corps Malade and Mehdi Idir

In February 2023, Grand Corps Malade published on Instagram a photo of the facade of the Olympia, decorated with the title “ Mr Aznavour » inscribed with the words “ 2024 “. There is then no longer any doubt, a film about Charles Aznavour is indeed in preparation.

Directed by the interpreter of “ Ladies » and by Mehdi Idir (Patients), the feature film retraces the youth, hardships and misery experienced by the famous singer. “He moved mountains to get to this point. He had nothing to succeed, and yet he didn’t give up (…) There are lots of things that people will discover” announced Grand Corps Malade at the microphone of RTL in September.

Carried by Tahar Rahim, the film is expected for October 23.

Maria by Pablo Larraín

Played by Angelina Jolie, Maria, scheduled for release this year, traces the beautiful, tumultuous and tragic Life of Maria Callas, the famous opera singer. The actress of Maleficent revealed, during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in October 2022, take “takes very seriously the responsibility of transmitting Maria’s life and legacy to the screen.”

The film is directed by Pablo Larraín, who previously worked on the Jackie Kennedy and Lady Diana biopics. But no new information has been communicated since the publication, in October, of the first photos of the feature film by Variety. Filming, which began at the same time, was to last eight weeks but no end date has been announced.

Better Man by Michael Gracey

Directed by Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman), Better Manscheduled for release on January 15, will feature the life of Robbie Williams, played by himself.

The film should explore “ the experiences that made him who he is and the demons he battled on and off stage as he became a huge star with hits like Angels” explained the director to Deadlinein February.

Cast: Steve Pemberton (The League of Gentlemen), Alison Steadman (Life Is Sweet) or Damon Herriman (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood).

A Complete Unknown by James Mangold

Currently filming since March, the biopic on Bob Dylan, played by Timothée Chalamet (Dune), attracts the curiosity of many fans with the first photos which have already leaked on social networks.

The film, scheduled for release in 2025, traces the beginnings of the singer “ aged 19, arriving in New York with only two dollars in his pocket, who would subsequently become a world star in less than three years “, explained the director, James Mangold (Le Mans 66, Logan), has Collider.

For this film, the star of Wonka is accompanied by other names from Hollywood cinema such as Edward Norton (Fight Club) or Elle Fanning (Maleficent).

Michael by Antoine Fuqua

It is undoubtedly the most anticipated biopic for 2025. And according to the first images and videos – which have not been made public – broadcast during CinemaCon in Las Vegas on April 10, many spectators already seem convinced.

Performed by Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s nephew, the film is intended to be a portrait of the complex personality of the pop star who died in 2009.
