New films and series to watch on Netflix from April 26 to May 2, 2024

Netflix releases a number of films and series into its catalog every week, without anyone noticing them or the platform officially announcing it. Écran Large looks back at the new features added by Netflix from April 26 to May 2, 2024, films and series combined in a non-exhaustive list.

What are the films and series not to be missed this week on the streaming platform?

goodbye earth

  • Already available
  • Length: 12 episodes of approximately 36 minutes

What does it talk about ? As an asteroid heads inexorably toward Earth, a determined teacher will stop at nothing to ensure the safety of her former students.

Why should you watch it? Korean series adapting a Japanese short story of the same name by the author of Bullet Train, Goodbye Earth is a pre-apocalypse series. Counting the last 200 days of Earth before the impact of an asteroid which will wipe out all forms of life on the globe, the series seems profoundly humanist and lingers on a scale that is more intimate than global. The whole thing seems to mix emotion and action for a quite intriguing cocktail.

The basic pitch is obviously reminiscent of the recent Don’t Look Up: Cosmic Denial by Adam McKa who was a hit on the platform, but the approach will therefore be radically different. Exit comedy, hello drama.

fiasco

  • Available April 30
  • Length: 7 episodes of approximately 35 minutes

What does it talk about ? On the set of his first film, a director sees the experience turn into a nightmare, and the making-of team records everything: hiccups, threats and sabotage attempts…

Why should you watch it? After Family Business And Five, Igor Gotesman returns with a new comedy with an insane cast. Pierre Niney, François Civil, Géraldine Nakache and Vincent Cassel are starring in Fiasco. In this series which tells the story of a shooting which turns into a nightmare, Gotesman adopts a documentary style, in the manner of The Office or evenArrested Development.

Not sure that the project will become as cult as these two series, but the idea is very attractive, especially thanks to its actors. The alchemy of the Civil-Niney duo, who has already worked with Gotesman on the friendly Five, should be explosive. A good series to disconnect your brain? We cross fingers

bohemian rhapsody

  • Available May 1st
  • Duration: 2h15

What does it talk about ? This biopic tells the story of Freddie Mercury, the iconic singer of Queen, and traces the personal struggles and the band’s rise to fame.

Why should you watch it? Bohemian Rhapsodyit’s the film that earned Rami Malek the Oscar for best actor in 2019. Indeed, the American of Egyptian origin (who plays a British man from Zanzibar, you can’t make this up) incredibly invested in his role as Freddie Mercury, undoubtedly making his performance one of the best performances in the history of musical biopics (although not everyone agrees on this).

Added to the music of Queen, which supports several significant scenes from the life of Mercury and his group, we find ourselves facing a rock fresco that takes us on a journey into the world of the 70s and 80s. Well, we would undoubtedly have preferred that the film explored the singer’s intimate life in more depth and avoided some embarrassing shortcuts (or even omissions), but it’s hard to imagine that the group’s fans wouldn’t be a little delighted to be able to get a new look. Queen compilation on their couch.

knock at the cabin

  • Available May 1st
  • Duration: 1h40

What does it talk about ? A family’s vacation turns into a nightmare when four strangers intrude into their isolated cabin and demand an unthinkable sacrifice to prevent the apocalypse.

Why should you watch it? M. Night Shyamalan’s latest tour de force, Knock at the Cabin is a gripping behind-closed-doors thriller that attempts to push viewers back to their limits. The film challenges our perception and approach to the supernatural or in any case, what seems irrational. The result is a true summary of the director’s filmography, and an introspection over nearly 30 years of career.

Dave Bautista delivers a remarkable performance as Leonard, enlightened leader and convinced of his mission. The rest of the cast is also well made, given that we find Rupert Grint and Jonathan Groff among others.

A MAN, A REAL MAN

  • Available May 2
  • Duration: 6 episodes of approximately 60 minutes

What does it talk about ? On the brink of bankruptcy with merciless enemies, an Atlanta real estate mogul does everything to turn things around as his empire crumbles.

Why should you watch it? A man, a real man tells the story of Charlie Croker (played by Jeff Daniels), a real estate mogul whose power is threatened by bankruptcy. Trapped by conflicts of interest and those who already savor his downfall, this man who had everything will quickly see his life become much more dangerous.

If the comparison with Succession seems natural given the subject, A man, a real man nevertheless seems to seek to be more comical (or less dramatic, it’s up to you), in particular thanks to its offbeat or even downright eccentric style. Featuring a great cast (Jeff Daniels, but also Diane Lane, Lucy Liu, Tom Pelphrey and Sarah Jones), this 6-episode mini-series will undoubtedly have no harm in taking you into the adventures of Charlie Croker.

barbaric

  • Available May 2
  • Duration: 1h42

What does it talk about ? Arriving in Detroit, a young woman discovers that her rental house is already occupied by an intruder… But the night has much worse surprises in store for her!

Why should you watch it? Since its release in 2022, Barbaric has become a small cult B series in the horror cinema landscape. Written and directed by Zack Cregger (Miss March), the film was even dubbed by Sam Raimi and it is well deserved! By going off the rails of other horror films, it deliberately loses the viewer through its narration to offer us a macabre and oppressive work, before a fairly masterful finale.

The cast includes Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård and Justin Long, who are having a blast in this reverse home invasion (unless?) where they risk at any moment experiencing a real descent into hell (literally) .

But also…

The Asunta Affair, Heeramandi: The Court Diamonds, T・P BON, Gianna, the Rebel Soul., Secrets of Neanderthal, Jujutsu Kaisen season 1, Jujutsu Kaisen the movie…
