When it is released in 2022, the film The menu had caused a sensation. Under the guise of comedy, Mark Mylod, the director has actually put together a real, almost horrific thriller. And for those who would like to see or rewatch this feature film, it is now available on Disney+. But don’t be fooled by the film’s seemingly leisurely first few minutes. Because in the 41st minute, everything goes wrong. The plot of Menu is based on the existence of an exclusive restaurant, secluded on a private island where only guests can come and dine. The chef, Julian Slowik, invites whoever he wants. One evening, 11 guests arrive on the island for dinner. Their name was validated by the chef – except for one, who replaced an approved guest, which immediately created a form of embarrassment. The gourmet dinner, made up of several well-presented dishes, begins. Julian Slowik explains to his guests, in long, very personal and intimate monologues, what they are about to taste.

At the end of the third course, the guests realize that the chef knows much more about their private lives than they imagined. Worse, through the dishes he presents to them, he exposes their dark secrets to others. Julian Slowik actually has only one goal with his exclusive restaurant: revenge on the elites. The defects must be erased. That’s when The menu takes a much more morbid turn. Before serving the 4th course, Julian Slowik reveals the jealousy that his sous chef, Jeremy, feels towards him. He tortures him, humiliates him in front of all the astonished guests. Jeremy then takes a gun and shoots himself in the head. This first death sets the tone for the evening.

The main actors of the Menu were applauded for their performance

There are more deaths in The menu. The leader’s plan is so well-oiled that it keeps the spectators in suspense. Which character and actor will be the next to succumb to the Machiavellian plan of Julian Slowik, played by Ralph Fiennes? What is certain is that they are all convincing in their respective roles. In fact, Ralph Fiennes and Anya Taylor-Joy, who plays Margot, the guest who shouldn’t have been there, were both nominated for Golden Globes for their performances in this film.
