“The final chapter of the trilogy”, we could read in 2006 on the poster for X-Men: The Last Stand, the third adventure of the famous mutants in the cinema, presented as the last but ultimately followed by numerous prequel episodes.
The final chapter of the trilogy
In this feature film by Brett Ratner, Marvel superheroes found themselves faced with a new threat and a terrible dilemma when a “treatment” was developed to strip them of their powers.
Quite harshly received upon its release in theaters and often considered less successful than its predecessors, this third film (whose spectator rating amounts to an average of 3,298 stars on AlloCiné) nevertheless has several advantages, and in particular its last sequence, which fans of the X-Men saga probably still remember.
If you have never seen The Last Stand, we recommend that you do not continue reading this article in order to retain all the surprise.
Magneto loses his powers
In the last part of the feature film, a violent battle breaks out on the island of Alcatraz between Magneto’s army, which seeks to get rid of the anti-mutant vaccine developed by humans at all costs, and the X-Men, who are trying to stop them.
In the heat of the moment, while leading his troops into combat, Magneto is hit by a syringe of serum injected into him by the Beast and therefore instantly loses all his powers, which allowed him to create magnetic fields around everyone. objects of a metallic nature.
Stripped of the extraordinary abilities that had made him a formidable conqueror, the “Master of Magnetism” suddenly becomes Erik Lehnsherr again, a simple, weakened and tired old man.
A real heartbreak for all the fans who had accompanied him for three feature films. However, a few minutes later, barely a second before the film ends, a tiny glimmer of hope will return to light up their faces.
A breathtaking final shot
Indeed, in the last shot of the work, we can see Magneto sitting in a public garden, alone, in front of a chess game, in memory of the games he played against his best enemy Charles Xavier. Slowly, as the camera rotates around him, the character’s hand approaches the opposing queen. The metal part then quivers imperceptibly on the screen, before the final credits start.
Had Magneto really lost his powers? Did he find them? Did his will succeed in countering the effects of the vaccine? Is he already planning his revenge? So many questions that this enigmatic sequence was remarkably able to raise in the minds of all the spectators.
