Sleepy Hollow: the director of Simetierre is preparing a remake of the famous horror film

Prepare to see some heads roll. It was in 2022 that we learned that a new adaptation of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, a short story written by Washington Irving in 1820, was in preparation at Paramount. While the studio has not provided an update on the project since, The Hollywood Reporter we learn today that the company has renewed its contract with director Lindsey Anderson Beer and that she is still working on this remake.

Return of the Headless Horseman

With her experience at the helm of the film Simetierre: the origins of evilprequel to Simietierre released last year on Paramount+, Lindsey Anderson Beer is set to write, direct and produce this new version of Sleepy Hollow.

As a reminder, the story of the headless horseman terrorizing a small town has already been the subject of several adaptations. The best known is undoubtedly that led by Johnny Depp under the direction of Tim Burton and released in 1999. A series version of Sleepy Hollow also saw the light of day in 2013 and can be seen streaming on Disney+.

We do not yet know exactly from what angle Anderson Beer will attack the legend of the headless horseman, but according to his statements to our colleagues at Colliderthe director will approach the subject in the same way as Simetierre :

“There is a similar way of approaching this type of work. During the writing of Simetierre: the origins of evil I kept asking myself what I would like to know as a fan of Simetierre. What questions are left unanswered in the book? What parts of the novel haven’t yet been explored in films?”

We can therefore expect that the filmmaker’s view of the history of Sleepy Hollow differs from that of Burton. While waiting to learn more about this new adaptation, Anderson Beer has other projects in the works with Paramount Pictures. Among them, a supernatural thriller titled Here Comes the Darkby the writers behind Don’t Worry Darlingbut also the science fiction thriller Optimize with Lashana Lynch (Captain Marvel) in casting, and a feature film on the American Girl doll brand in collaboration with Mattel.
