this drastic measure should improve the quality of films.

Better, fewer and cheaper : this would be Netflix’s new policy regarding the production of original films. Action blockbusters such as The Gray Man And Red Notice (200 million each) will soon be nothing more than a distant memory. The watchword for future productions of the streaming platform would in reality announce an era of “austerity” according to the New York Times.

big changes announced by netflix

Goodbye Scott Stuber, make way for Dan Lin! In January 2024, Netflix hosted a new head of the film division, the opportunity to implement the “fewer, better” film production strategy promoted by its predecessor, and about which the broadcaster talked so much. After a slew of rather mediocre feature films, populated by stars with staggering salaries (Gal Gadot, Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds received 20 million each for Red Notice) whose audience does not match the sums invested, the site will make a 180 degree turnaround. According to our colleagues at the New York Times, pseveral modifications have taken place and will take place, such as the reorganization of the film department. Made up of around 150 people, it will see some of its members replaced to accommodate the reshuffle of the distribution of teams, which will now be done by gender (and no longer by budget). There will be 4 of them (action, fantasy, horror and science fiction / dramas, thrillers and family films / holiday films, faith and young adult / comedies and romantic comedies).

The salaries of the stars, which we mentioned above, should now be linked to film audiences, as box office receipts can be during a more traditional theatrical release. All these changes aim to quality and diversification of films, that is to say, ultimately, that the latter cost Netflix less and are better distributed among the 4 groups above. One of the explanations for this change of direction is the massive arrival of new subscribers since the end of account sharing. Some 260 million profiles were identified by the platform at the start of the year, a very large audience to whom it is appropriate to give what they like, which inevitably turns out to be diverse and varied. And for this, we must offer a catalog that is both varied and targeted.

And you, what do you think of these different measures put in place by Netflix?
