Our opinion on The menu :

With The menu, Mark Mylod delivers not only a thriller very well conducted, where the suspense remains whole, one movie GOOD blackbut above all a satire with all the worst that can be in the world of high gastronomy.

Chef Slowik (Ralph Fiennes), who practices his art on an island where the guests join him, is full of himself and tyrannical with his brigade which he leads in a military manner. Here, the guests – Anya Taylor Joy, redhead for the occasion, in the lead – experience a deadly experience in which they are trapped by the leader and his team. It’s almost “eat or die“.

The director, in addition to the actors, films the kitchen, and its details, the meat maturing, the pipettes and piping bags in close-ups, which will please lovers of great cuisine. In addition to these appetizing shots, each moment of the meal is indicated on the screen, as is the title of the dish in the same way as on a card, so as not to lose anything of the course of the meal, the main thread of the plot.

Some elements seem directly inspired by the (real) world of the gastronomy. Thus, the “bread plate without bread” is presented as a paint palette with elements of different colors, which is reminiscent of the apology of excess dish by Matthias Marc in Top chef in 2021. Or the evocation of a certain fictional Guy Passard, a mix between the first name of Guy Savoy and the surname of Alain Passard. Details that cooking enthusiasts will have fun spotting.
