avant STAR WARS : THE ACOLYTE

By choosing to set its story in the era of the High Republic, Disney has ventured onto slippery ground, as it has never been adapted on screen and within the canon universe. The Jedi are revealed from a new angle, arrogant, sure of themselves and all-powerful. Obviously, everything is not perfect, the narration is too disjointed (Disney has accustomed us to that) and we do not really know where the showrunner wanted to take us, except for promises to make the link with George Lucas’ prequel.

The series is also accused of conveying an image that is too “wokist”, and some are disappointed with the pace of the plot. But Disney has the opportunity to develop a new universe around this still unknown era. We will have to wait and see if Disney will order a season 2 or not.

In the meantime, the company will explore the galaxy even further with a film on the dawn of the Jedi, under the leadership of James Mangold. It must tell the origin of the Jedi Order, 25,000 years before George Lucas’ Star Wars. This foray off the beaten track of George Lucas’ works made us want to dive back into this still little-known period that is the Old Republic, set between Dawn of the Jedi and The High Republic narrated in The Acolyte, and that the best Star Wars game players : Knights of the Old Republic know well.

the FALL of the OLD REPUBLIC

The era of the Old Republic spans 15,009 years of history before the Republic began to fall. (The Old Republic begins approximately between 25,000 BBY and 9,991 BBY, and the fall of the Old Republic occurs between 7,977 BBY and 1,032 BBY.) This is therefore a huge period known to fans of comics, graphic novels or other books from the Legends universe (non-canon), particularly through Knights of the Old Republic divided into 9 volumes, taking place 3964 years before episode IV: A New Hope or even The Knight Errant and novels dedicated to Darth Bane, the greatest Sith of the time.

The Old Republic was a time when Jedi served as guardians of peace and justice, and conflicts were often resolved through diplomacy. But this era was marked by a series of conflicts called the Ancient Sith Wars : The Great Sith War (3996 BBY), the Mandalorian Wars (3976-3960 BBY), the Mandalorian-Jedi War, and the First Jedi Purge (3954-3951 BBY). This Jedi-Sith War resulted in the Sith being expelled from Coruscant and eradicated. All except Darth Bane (the inventor of the famous rule of tworeprised by Dark Sidious with Darth Vader).

This century of conflict nearly destroyed the Galactic Republic. But this period nevertheless strengthened the Republic, which emerged stronger than ever, which brings us back to the somewhat arrogant Jedi Order in The Acolyte.

This state of political malaise has in any case exhausted the Old Republic, as well as its resources. With the wars over, the Old Republic military was disbanded and Coruscant reinvented its Republic for a new era and elected Tarsus Valorum as its first Supreme Chancellor. This renewed optimism after the recapture of Coruscant and the reestablishment of a new galactic governing authority allowed the Sith Darth Bane to escape into the shadows as a surviving threat to the future of the Republic and especially the Jedi Order. All of these effects ripple heavily into the more familiar periods of the galaxy covered by the prequel trilogy.
