Sofiane Boufal has quickly become a key player at Union Saint-Gilloise, despite a late start after a lackluster season in Qatar. Sébastien Pocognoli underlines Boufal's qualities, but notes that he must also improve in efficiency.
Boufal had to wait until matchday 11 to get his first start, but he has since found a regular place in the team. “Sofiane has world-class moments, especially in comparison with the rest of the Belgian championship,” explains Pocognoli in comments relayed by The Last Hour.
However, his statistical contribution remains limited for the moment to two assists, one on a free kick against Antwerp and the other recently against Club Brugge.
According to Pocognoli, Boufal could have accumulated more assists. “He was unlucky, some of his splendid actions didn't come to fruition. For example, Mignolet prevented a decisive pass on Sunday with a magnificent save.”
The Union offers Boufal a system where he can primarily focus on offense. “He loses fewer balls, but he already does a lot for a creative player,” adds Pocognoli. Sadiki and Vanhoutte handle defensive duties, allowing Boufal to focus on his offensive role.
According to Pocognoli, Boufal still has to adapt to the physical demands of the Pro League. “He plays in a team that exerts high pressure and tries to win a lot of second balls. That requires a different intensity than what he is used to.”
