In our recap, the European Commission confirmed that it is investigating the possibility that Formula 1 owner Liberty Media could proceed with the acquisition of the Moto GP motorcycling series.

In brief

Liberty under EC investigation

The European Commission is concerned that Liberty Media could exercise too much power to control broadcast prices for the two popular motorsport series if it takes ownership. CVC Capital Partners sold its stake in Moto GP when it acquired before Liberty Media.

“By acquiring Dorna Sports, owner of Moto GP, Liberty Media would hold the commercial rights to two of the most popular motor sports in Europe: Formula 1 and Moto GP,” said Teresa Ribera, executive vice president of the EC in charge of the clean, fair and competitive transition.

“We need to evaluate more carefully whether this acquisition could have a negative impact on European broadcasters, for example in terms of increased licensing fees, and ultimately on European consumers and motorsport fans through higher prices. We are also committed to openly considering any substantiated claims made by the parties regarding the potential benefits this acquisition could bring, both for fans and for the industry and consumers. »
