MotoGP Barcelona J1 Debriefing Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha/13): “when the grip is really low, we are light years away”

First day of the Barcelona Solidarity MotoGP Grand Prix difficult for Fabio Quartararo who does not go directly to Q2.

Frustration could be the key word this Friday for someone who, moreover, seems to have experienced a new technical problem, which went completely unnoticed at the very end of the session…

As usualwe report here his words during his debriefing, without the slightest formatting, and today directly transcribed from French.

No Q2, Fabio…
Fabio Quartararo : “I was kind of expecting it. It’s a track where we really struggle, a track where we are in difficulty. A track where there are always the same grip problems, and here where we feel it the most.

Is it the cold that accentuates the lack of grip?
“No, no, no, precisely the opposite, normally with the cold, it depends on the temperatures but this afternoon they are ideal temperatures to have the most grip. Afterwards, even the times, compared to May, I think they are a little slower for the men in front. But it's true thatWe really had trouble riding today. »

Can't you use the other data?
“We can, but it won’t really help us. And above all, we clearly see that we are the bike with the least grip. I managed to do a few laps behind quite a few bikes and we can clearly see that it's a circuit where turns 3, 4, 7, 9, practically all the turns, we really need a good exit from the corner , and we don't have it. »

After the progress towards the end of the overseas tour, were you expecting that or were you hoping for more?
“Here, I expected a little bit of that, maybe a little bit better, but especially seeing how far we are in this aspect, it’s huge. There are circuits where when the track has grip we are not as far from some motorcycles. There are circuits, when the grip is really low, we are light years away, so how to find the solution for that, I don't know. »

The advances in electronics that you were able to make weren't useful here?
«
We have so little grip that no matter what I do, it's always the same difficulty. We can't take a step forward. It's not even the limit of riding, it's the limit of the bike: you accelerate, you can try everything, the bike slips all the time. »

Despite all the tires you have available, there isn't one that makes the difference?
“There is a difference, but it’s still the same problems.
Soft, Medium, we didn't even try Hard, because honestly it was already very complicated with the medium. But it's always the same difference where we slip from the start. The times are a little better, but it's the same thing with the bike. »

Johann who is 4, the Hondas overall who are doing a little better, who are perhaps progressing faster than you currently?
“Honestly, I don't really care, I'm not really concerned. Afterwards, it's certain that when I was behind Johann, we see that as I had already said on several occasions, there are places where we are better than the Honda but there are many places where we are much worse, like the grip. And here, you can feel it a lot. »

Is it a pain in the ass at the front? Doesn't it prevent or can it be managed?
“It's okay, it's okay, especially since Michelin made good front tires I think, so it's okay. I don't think there were a lot of falls, especially in the turn 5.”
