Floods in the Southeast Question Priorities in Local Authorities

20th Street | Rabat

In recent days, the southeastern regions have witnessed heavy thunderstorms, which caused deaths and missing persons, and isolated the residents of some areas, as a result of damage to the road infrastructure, and also led to the destruction of agricultural products.

The torrential floods that hit these regions revealed the fragility of the infrastructure, especially roads and technical facilities (“bridges”), in addition to the weakness of water drainage channels, and the miserable conditions of a number of families living in mud houses, some of which are on the verge of collapse.

Remote village groups in the southeast have turned into disaster groups in every sense of the word, as some of their headquarters were surrounded by torrents and flood debris.

The fragility revealed by the rains in the southeastern groups raised the question of priorities in these regions, whose elected representatives are competing to buy cars and conclude supply deals, while the local infrastructure remains fragile without maintenance or monitoring.

In this regard, activists in Zagora, Tata, Tinghir, Ouarzazate and Taroudant criticized the tendency of local groups to spend budgets on secondary matters such as summer festivals, purchasing and renting cars, and concluding bon comand deals to organize parties and receive guests, while these areas lack the most basic necessities of life.

In addition, local events recorded the lack of oversight in a number of infrastructure projects by the authorities, which generate huge sums of money for companies, engineering offices and community leaders without fulfilling the purpose or meeting the demands of the population.
