Koundé and Digne, an unexpected solution to the problem of full-backs among the Blues?

-

Since Benjamin Pavard announced that he no longer wanted to play on the wing and Lucas Hernandez only plays one match in three due to repeated injuries, the full-back positions have often been a concern in the French team. One day, it’s Jules Koundé who isn’t made for it; another, it’s Theo Hernandez who doesn’t defend well; another, it’s the resources that are insufficient, the training that is failing. And now, when it’s time to face Belgium tonight in the Nations League, Koundé has become in six months one of the best right-backs in Europe, indispensable to Les Bleus, while Lucas Digne, a probable starter on the left, comes back from nowhere and perhaps asserts himself as the solution for the future given his consistency with Aston Villa. That’s rather good timing, though: behind, the competition isn’t pushing hard. On the right, on the other hand, the rise of Sacha Boey (23 years old) with Bayern Munich and the progress of Kiliann Sildillia (22 years old) with Fribourg augur a slightly clearer horizon in the event of a problem.
