American singer Mariah Carey announced the death of her mother Patricia (87 years old) and her sister Allison (63 years old) on the same day without revealing the details of the death.

“My heart is broken because I lost my mother last weekend and my sister lost her life on the same day in a tragic turn of events,” the 55-year-old singer said in a statement to People magazine.

She continued that she felt grateful to have spent the last week with her mother before her death, adding: “I appreciate everyone’s love, support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

The Grammy-winning American singer did not reveal the cause of death of any of her family members.

A relationship full of contradictions

Mariah Carey’s relationship with her mother, Patricia, witnessed many ups and downs, as her parents separated when she was three years old, and her father, Alfred Roy Carey, died in 2002 after being diagnosed with a rare type of cancer.

Carey dedicated part of her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, to talking about her relationship with her mother, which she described as causing her a lot of pain and confusion. Despite their strained relationship, Carey included her mother’s name in the opening dedication to the book. She wrote: “To Pat (Patricia), my mother, who I believe did the best she could despite it all. I will love you the best I can, always.”

She said her journey with Patricia was full of contrasts, and it wasn’t and white, describing their feelings as a complete rainbow.

“Our relationship is a thorny rope of pride, pain, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment,” Maria continued in the book. “A complicated love that binds my heart to my mother’s.”

Carey did not deny the influence of her opera singer mother on her taste in music and her love of singing, which later affected their relationship. She also said in her memoirs: “There was a clear shift: She made me feel like competition, like a threat. Instead of our previous bond, a different bond emerged, a cord that connected us through shared biology and social obligation.” In another place, she says: “It’s one of the things that comes with success when you love someone who is jealous of you professionally, but when that person is your mother and that feeling is exposed at such a young age, it’s especially painful.”

Despite the ups and downs in their lives, Mariah has maintained a close relationship with her mother. In 2010, they reunited for a special episode of ABC’s Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You and performed a special motherhood duet.

Her relationship with her sister, Allison Carey, became increasingly strained after Allison filed a lawsuit against her in 2021, accusing her of intentionally inflicting emotional distress over content in Mariah Carey’s memoir. Allison alleged that her sister used the book as a way to embarrass her, and described the memoir as full of lies and malicious reviews, after Carey accused her of putting her in unsafe situations during her childhood.

Mariah Carey noted that writing the memoir took her a long time to gather the courage, as she reflected her memories, experiences and struggles, giving a strong voice to the little girl inside her.
