Leicester City are close to making a breakthrough in their £19.5 million bid to sign Genk midfielder Bilal El Khannouss.

Manager Steve Cooper is targeting attacking players before Friday’s transfer deadline and Genk are expected to accept Leicester’s latest offer for the Morocco international.

Leicester are also seeking a No 9 forward but the expected addition of El Khannouss, 20, will provide Cooper with some guile in the attacking midfield position.

Bids for other targets including Matías Soulé, Wilfried Zaha, Armando Broja, Fotis Ioannidis and Gabriel Sara have all fallen through in a frustrating window for last season’s Championship winners.

Wolves move for keeper Johnstone

Wolves manager Gary O’Neil is ready to sign Crystal Palace goalkeeper Sam Johnstone after abandoning his bid for Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale.

Johnstone is expected to join Wolves for a fee of around £10 million after losing the No 1 jersey to Dean Henderson at Palace. On Tuesday evening, Wolves were locked in negotiations with Palace to agree the final fee and personal terms.

The arrival of the England international will make the future of José Sá hugely uncertain. He could leave before the weekend.

O’Neil has a limited budget. Burnley have rejected a £20 million bid for winger Luca Koleosho.

Olympiacos are weighing up a £7 million bid for Wolves winger Daniel Podence.

Cancelo leaving City in £21m Saudi deal

Manchester City have confirmed that João Cancelo will depart the club to join Saudi side for €25 million (£21 million).

The defender has not been part of Pep Guardiola’s first-team set-up over the last two seasons, having spent time on loan at Bayern Munich and Barcelona.
