In recent months, the RIVM has studied the PFAS content of eggs from sixty gardens across the country. The results are disturbing since, in more than half of the cases, you already ingest more PFAS than the limit value if you eat less than one egg per week. And many other eggs also contained high concentrations.
In Flanders, we are not going as far as our neighbors, but the recommendations, however, limit consumption to two eggs per week from your hens. “We are currently holding in this opinion, but we will of course also examine the data on which the Netherlands have founded their decision,” said Joris Moonens of the Ministry of Care and Health. (KBA).
For its part, the Walloon Region does not prohibit the consumption of domestic breeding eggs, even if it encourages the precaution in the areas where the PFAS is high. And to recommend distributing varied food, containing protein and minerals, in feeders rather than the ground to prevent the hens from peaking on land potentially contaminated by PFAS in search of worms or larvae.
