The construction of a new distribution center in Herentals supports the ambitious growth plans of Lidl In Belgium: at the rate of six store openings per year, 80 net stores will be added by 2038.
Sustainable building
The construction phase of the structural work of a 43,000 m² distribution center along the E313 motorway in HERENTALS is almost finished: from the beginning of 2027, LIDL will supply the stores of the vast region around Antwerp from this center. The retailer invests 122 million euros in the logistics center, which is built according to strict standards Breeam Outstanding, the highest international standard for sustainable buildings.
Residual heat from industrial cooling, for example, will be used to heat offices. The warehouse roof will be equipped with a megawatt of solar panels which will also feed the vast charging infrastructure for electric cars and bikes, among others.
The range widens
The new warehouse is necessary given the discounter expansion projects. By 2038, Lidl plans to open some 80 additional stores, which represents on average more than six new branches per year. Today, the channel has 302 stores in Belgium.
“Belgium remains an essential growth market for Lidl. This sixth distribution center is therefore essential if we want to continue to supply our current and future stores with fresh products, ”says Marjolein Frederickx, CEO. “In addition to the new stores we open, we want to optimize the logistics processes of our existing subsidiaries. In addition, as we continue to expand our assortment, we need more space. »»
