At the end of 2024, INSEE (National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies) published its latest data concerning the population of French municipalities and departments as of January 1, 2022.

As in previous years, Bas-Rhin continues its momentum by gaining residentsand particularly in its capital, Strasbourg.

News Strasbourg takes stock of the latest figures and lists the most populated towns in the department.

400 additional inhabitants in Strasbourg

Since 1982, Strasbourg has seen its population increase year after year. After crossing the 290,000 inhabitants mark in 2020, the Alsatian capital had 291,709 inhabitants in 2022.

Certainly, the Strasbourg population is gaining 396 habitants compared to 2021 but this increase is lower than previous years : + 737 and 2021, + 3 348 and 2020.

Strasbourg still remains the 8th most populous city in behind , , , , , and which have more than 300,000 inhabitants.

According to INSEE figures, the Bas-Rhin department is the only department in the Grand Est region to have significantly gained inhabitants: + 4,301 inhabitants between 2021 and 2022 to reach 1 156 963 habitants.

Over the same period, the population of other departments decreased or increased very slightly, such as in (+779) and in Haut-Rhin (+717).

The 10 most populated cities in Bas-Rhin

Here is the list of the 10 most populated municipalities in the department in 2022:

  • Strasbourg: 291,709 inhabitants (+396 inhabitants compared to 2021)
  • : 36,070 inhabitants (+ 355)
  • : 34,382 inhabitants (+ 253)
  • Illkirch-Graffenstaden: 27,339 inhabitants (+ 221)
  • Lingolsheim: 20,683 inhabitants (+ 417)
  • Sélestat: 19,523 inhabitants (+ 223)
  • Bischheim: 18,289 inhabitants (+ 350)
  • Ostwald : 13 492 habitants (+ 182)
  • Obernai: 12,303 inhabitants (+ 87)
  • Bischwiller: 12,211 inhabitants (- 224)

Apart from Obernai which gains one place, the order of municipalities remains unchanged compared to 2021.
