A colossal fire broke out yesterday evening in the Al-Zayla'a building, located on Al-Montazah Street near Shalabi station, in the port district of Tripoli. The incident caused immediate panic among residents and workers present in the building at the time of the flames. Initial reports indicate that the fire spread quickly, making evacuation difficult and dangerous.
From the start of the fire, rescue teams affiliated with civil defense and the fire brigade of the Union of Municipalities of Al-Faiha responded promptly. Their priority was to evacuate the occupants of the building and bring the flames under control. Despite their courageous efforts, the building suffered considerable structural damage, leading to its partial collapse. Unfortunately, two members of the civil defense teams and firefighters lost their lives in the collapse.
The scale of the fire required a coordinated response from local authorities. The Minister of Interior and Municipalities in the interim government, Judge Bassam Moulawi, closely followed the relief operations. He established immediate communications with several key officials, including the governor of the North, Judge Ramzi Nahra, and the president of the Union of Municipalities of Al-Faiha, Hassan Ghamrawi. Additionally, he contacted the Acting Mayor of the Port Region, Iman Al-Rafie, as well as the Commander of the Northern Zone of the Internal Security Forces, Colonel Mustafa Badran, in order to intensify the rescue efforts with the required speed. .
At a press conference held shortly after the incident, Minister Moulawi expressed his deep sadness at the loss of the two heroes who fell in the service of the community. He stressed the importance of strengthening fire safety measures in public and private buildings to prevent such tragedies in the future. The minister also reaffirmed the caretaker government's commitment to supporting the victims' families and providing immediate assistance to those affected by the fire.
In response to the collapse of the Al-Zayla'a building, Minister Moulawi gave specific instructions to the Director General of Civil Defense. He asked Colonel Nabil Farah to immediately go to the site of the collapse to supervise the operations of lifting the rubble and searching for the missing people. The move aims to speed up the rescue process and maximize the chances of finding potential survivors in the rubble.
Rescue teams, under the leadership of Colonel Farah, deployed specialized equipment to access the most inaccessible areas of the collapsed building. Search dogs and rescue technicians were mobilized to locate potential victims. Efforts continue unabated, despite the difficult conditions and the risks linked to the partial collapse of the building.
Alongside the rescue operations, additional safety measures have been put in place to prevent any additional fire risks in the surrounding area. Local authorities ordered the evacuation of nearby buildings and established a security perimeter to facilitate access for rescue teams and ensure the safety of residents.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. The first hypotheses suggest an electrical short circuit or negligence in the management of the building's electrical installations. Investigators are working closely with civil defense services to determine the exact circumstances that led to this tragedy.
