Android Automotive OS, based on Android 15, brings many new features to Google's operating system. Particularly in terms of multi-user management and multimedia interface. But what are the concrete new features of this major update?
- Android Automotive adds “Current Multi-User” mode so that the OS can be used by all passengers at the same time
- For example, everyone can enjoy their content on a dedicated screen, both driver and passengers.
- Other features are available like the new adaptive user interface
Android Automotive is available for cars and, more recently, for motorcycles. The new version based on Android 15 adds the mode “Concurrent Multi-User” which allows simultaneous use of the operating system by several users.
What's new in Android Automotive based on Android 15?
In fact, this mode allows, for example, passengers in the rear to enjoy a personalized experience on their screen independently from that of the driver. This is an extension of the multi-screen support available since Android 14. Be careful, however: with some manufacturers, the mode is disabled by default.
There is also features in the testing phase such as specific configurations for autonomous vehicles. The settings allow you to restrict access to a guest profile for passengers or to offer an experience dedicated to them only.
The media application is also entitled to a total overhaul with a new adaptive user interfaceboth in portrait and landscape. This is an improvement that automatically adapts to different screens of different sizes in vehicle cabins.
Bluetooth pairing is also made easy via a long press on the button “push-to-talk” of the vehicle. If you have a cellular or Wi-Fi connection in your car, updating the time zone happens automatically via Google Play Services geolocation services.
Obviously, the release of these new features for Android Automotive OS depends at the goodwill of car manufacturers. It is therefore possible that the update will not be immediately available to you. This operating system is very popular because unlike Android Auto which requires a connection to your smartphone, there is no need for a phone to pair. The integration is therefore very practical.
