A car drove into a crowd gathered at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, eastern Germany, this Friday, December 20. The latest report, provided by Reiner Hasseloff, the minister-president of the Saxony-Anhalt region, shows at least two deaths and several dozen injured.

On X, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz wrote that “the information coming from Magdeburg portends the worst.” Many rescuers are on site.

Car driver arrested

A large police force was deployed on site. “Large police operations are currently taking place at the Magdeburg Christmas market. The Christmas market in the city center is closed,” local police reported on X.

The driver of the car, which drove into the crowd “for at least 400 meters through the Christmas market” was arrested near the Christmas market, according to the police. The suspect is a 50-year-old man of Saudi origin and arrived in Germany in 2006. Regional authorities say they suspect “an attack”.

In 2016, a truck drove into the Christmas market in Berlin. This terrorist attack, then claimed by Daesh, killed 13 people and injured 17 others.
