The Canadian visited earlier this week the leaders of SKA, Ivan Demidov’s KHL club.
Nick Bobrov, who is Russian, was accompanied by two Canadians: GM Kent Hughes and Vincent Lecavalier, who also works on the second floor for the CH organization.
Together, they spoke to Roman Rotenberg and visited the Russian club’s facilities.
And even if several subjects were discussed, we agree that the reason why the leaders of the Canadiens were there was to talk about the development of Ivan Demidov, a excellent hope too often left on the bench by his coach.
Otherwise, they would not have gone to Russia.
What we notice, however, is that several Quebecor articles were signed by journalists who denounce the Canadian’s presence in Russia because of the war.
Jean-Nicolas Blanchet wonders if the Canadian is above the war and François-David Rouleau signs a paper which speaks, in the eyes of Loïc Tassé, of an odious and reprehensible decision on the part of the CH.
The debate is interesting because yes, war exists. Yes, there is a moral debate to be had. And yes, politics and sport, like it or not, will always be linked to each other.
But we understand that the CH was there legally to follow one of its leading hopes. If he didn’t do it, he would be blamed for it.
At a certain point, we also have to let people do their job and that of the CH, which is to arrange for Ivan Demidov, a hope that the CH had the right to draft, to progress. And it’s not as if the CH likes to see him play in Russia since in an ideal world, he would be in Quebec.
Note also that in the texts, there is no real mention of the fact that the CH would have been favorable to the return of Russia to international competitions, according to what Roman Rotenberg said. In my eyes, this would have been a more concrete basis for debate.
There are Canadians from the hockey world who work in the KHL, both as players and coaches. And we haven’t seen the same criticism of them as of the CH this week.
But nevertheless, they established themselves there. They are not just passing through.
Note that even Renaud Lavoie, who works for Quebecor, was not exactly in favor of such texts. He said it on the radio (BPM Sports) in his morning column.
I understand where the debate comes from, but I won’t throw the first stone at Kent Hughes even though he has the right to do so… especially considering that we’ve known for months that it’s in the plans, this visit.
