According to the latest figures revealed by INSEE, Maine-et-Loire has 828,151 inhabitants, or 17,217 more inhabitants compared to 2016.

INSEE (National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies) has published population figures as of January 1, 2022 which will come into force on January 1, 2025. The official population in Pays de la Loire stands at 3,879,000 people, an increase of 0.6% per year. Between 2016 and 2022, Loire-Atlantique remains the locomotive of the region, with a population gain of 1.1% per year on average. Vendée shows a sustained increase in population (+0.9%). Growth in Maine-et-Loire is more moderate (+0.4%). Sarthe and Mayenne are experiencing stabilization.
Between 2016 and 2022, Maine-et-Loire gained 17,217 inhabitants, an average increase of 0.4% each year. Growth slower than between 2011 and 2016 (+ 0.5% per year). With 828,151 inhabitants, Maine-et-Loire is located in 38e rank of metropolitan departments.
The increase in population is mainly due to the demographic growth of the Angevin conurbation which gains 2,520 inhabitants each year, or + 0.8% per year. Angers Loire Métropole thus contributes 88% to the population gain in Maine-et-Loire.
Among the large towns in the department, between 2016 and 2022, Cholet gained 356 inhabitants, to reach 54,074 inhabitants on January 1, 2022. For its part, Saumur again lost inhabitants over the same period (- 1,051 ), with 26,074 inhabitants.
