He was supposed to step back after the chaotic sequence of the dissolution and the appointment of the new Prime Minister Michel Barnier. Emmanuel Macron nevertheless took advantage of the commemorations of the 80th anniversary of Le Havre, to evoke this Thursday, September 12 in the evening a “new era” with a fragmented Parliament, asserting “hope” what “compromises will be made” between the different political forces in the constitution of the future executive. “It is up to the government to carry out projects, to pass laws, but also to administer. The President has his own skills.”also noted the President of the Republic.

The head of state also showed signs of openness on the issue of changing the voting method, while several political families, such as the National Rally or within the New Popular Front, are calling for the implementation of proportional representation in legislative elections. “I think that this is an institutional subject that exists, that is not new. And I am in favor of addressing the issue by asking experts first to explain what it means, where it would go, what the possible plan would be, so that political parties can express themselves on it,” he explained.

He also had a word for the mayor of Le Havre who was present at his side. “I chose Edouard Philippe seven years ago because I trust him. He was a great Prime Minister at my sides”, praised Emmanuel Macron. He did not, however, comment on his former Prime Minister’s recent candidacy for the Elysée, stating that “We are not going to go into pause mode until 2027.” The head of state then claimed to be “mainly focused on what’s happening today” et “wanting the country to succeed”ensuring “see far” more “try to do things in the right order.”

Edouard Philippe, seated behind the same lectern that accompanies the presidential trips, had shortly before “sincerely thank you” Emmanuel Macron, to demonstrate by his presence “the importance that the Nation now gives” at the liberation of Le Havre from the Nazi yoke in September 1944.

The two men then began a joint walkabout, each greeting the locals who had come to watch the ceremony. This unexpected step in the memorial cycle of this 80th anniversary was added because it is “the first time” that Le Havre organizes “great ceremonies”, they argue at the Elysée.

Political “friend”

The invitation dates back to the spring. An eternity: it was before the dissolution of the National Assembly, this dissolution “poorly thought out, poorly explained, poorly prepared”by which Emmanuel Macron “killed the presidential majority”in the words of Edouard Philippe, of a rare hardness coming from a «ami» politics. It was before the Macronist defeat in the legislative elections, and the inextricable situation of an Assembly without a majority. And it was before the announcement of the candidacy of the man from Le Havre “at the next presidential election”September 3.

The new candidate no longer hides his differences. On Wednesday on BFMTV, he refused to say whether he is in the “presidential camp”. Above all, he gives enthusiastic support to Michel Barnier, this other baron of the right whom the head of state has just appointed to Matignon and whom the Macronists are viewing with circumspection.
