Formal address and compulsory uniform: CAQ’s next generation demands more discipline at school

Members of the CAQ’s Relève are demanding that Quebec schools be given a new lease of life to stop the spread of violence and lack of civility in the classroom.

Aurélie Diep, the group’s president, demanded in an open letter published Thursday a “recovery of Quebec schools” through the return of “a culture of civic-mindedness towards teachers, school staff and other students.”

These changes would result in the imposition of the wearing of uniforms in secondary school, the obligation to address people formally from the 3rd cycle and the participation of young people in the tasks of their school.

These actions will “sound the end of recess for the small minority of students who prevent everyone else from enjoying school,” she writes.

Parental involvement

The young CAQ members also want to fight against “the disengagement of parents who systematically defend their child, even when he or she is in the wrong.” This problem would be corrected by giving schools more power to punish reprehensible acts.

They also suggest that parents of students guilty of violence and bullying accompany their children to mandatory training courses set up with the aim of “changing their behavior and repairing their actions.”

La Relève will debate these proposals at its congress which will take place on September 7.
