Larger internet traffic peaks observed in 2024 in Belgium

After the covid pandemic, the Belgian Internet node experienced a return to normal in 2022 and 2023. The year 2024, on the other hand, was punctuated by significant peaks. On Monday, November 4, 2024, 520 Gbit/s passed through BNIX, or 15% more than the record of 462 Gbit/s in 2023, points out Belnet, which adds that 500 Gbit/s are now frequent.

According to Stefan Gulinck, Senior Network Architect at Belnet and co-responsible for BNIX, the exact reason for these peaks remains unknown. “It’s often a combination of several small factors. Sometimes the connection to a particular event is obvious. For example, we saw a spike at the start of each school year. We also noticed that network traffic BNIX did not experience its classic summer low in 2024. The cause most likely lies in what has been dubbed “the ultimate sporting summer”, marked by Euro football and the Olympics, and the fact as more and more people watch these events streaming rather than on television.
