Among the fallout from the recent visit of the Prime Minister of Senegal to Mauritania, a new agreement in principle on fishing has strengthened collaboration between the two neighboring countries.
The Senegalese Minister of Fisheries, Dr. Fatou Diouf, announced on Friday an agreement in principle with Mauritania to increase the fishing quotas granted to Senegalese fishermen. This decision, which will be finalized after the assessment of small pelagic stocks, follows discussions held from January 12 to 14 in Nouakchott with his Mauritanian counterpart, El Vadil Sidaty Ahmed Louly.
The two countries agreed to strengthen their collaboration in several key areas: scientific research, health certification, artisanal processing, co-management of local fisheries, inland fisheries, aquaculture and maritime affairs. Particular emphasis was placed on respecting authorized fishing zones and the landing obligation.
The ministers also made progress on the demarcation of the security zone around the Grande Tortue Ahmeyim platform (GTA), a strategic oil and gas project currently being validated between the two countries.
-This visit, which is part of the trip by Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko to Mauritania, also allowed the Senegalese delegation to visit the mineral port of Nouadhibou and a fishing factory, illustrating the desire to strengthen economic ties between both countries.
