Some 3,500 companies (+4%) were working in the DR in 2023. Most are small, with fewer than 50 employees. But it is the large ones, with more than 100 employees, who carry out three quarters of research expenditure, notes the OFS. Furthermore, companies employed nearly 69,000 people for their R&D activities. This number has increased by 5% since 2021. The people hired are generally highly qualified and 45% of them occupy the position of researcher. Research staff are predominantly male, with women representing only a quarter of the total workforce. A share that has stagnated for several years.
